June 26 & 27: I Ma‘a i ka ‘Ike
Pasifika Foundation Hawaii’s Community-based Host-Visitor Project
June 26 & 27 2009, Honolulu
Registration form available here.
Our conversations with people in Maoli communities from Waipa on Kaua‘i to Hilo on Hawai‘i Island about the CBHV project have become a profound exploration of the concepts that this project entails, and how those concepts intersect with everyday lives and community visions. Now we invite all to join us in the next steps, as we build towards the creation of a CBHV test program with 3-5 pilot projects that will seek to define some new ways for host communities to engage with visitors from the outside, for the benefit of the community and its own long-term goals for health and sustainability.
‘Aha ‘Ike
CBHV informational meeting
Friday, June 26
10 a.m. – 1 p.m. (includes lunch)
Honolulu Airport Best Western on the Plaza
This gathering is an introductory presentation, by PFH board president Ramsay Taum, of the Community-based Host-Visitor project, followed by a talk-story session. PFH has offered a number of these informational community meetings throughout Hawaii, from November 2008 through June 2009. The ‘Aha ‘Ike on Friday, June 26 is offered for those who are interested in this project but who have been unable to attend any of the previous community meetings. Financial aid for airfare costs is available by application to PFH. For more information, email Ana Currie
Ka Huaka‘i ‘Ewa
Ancient landscapes, modern lens
Friday, June 26
3:30 – 8:00 p.m. (train ride includes dinner)
Ka Huaka‘i ‘Ewa is an example of how community groups can present culture and history using modern tools. Shad Kane, of Ahahui Sivila o Kapolei Hawaiian Civic Club, uses the train, a remnant of the plantation era on Oahu, as the vehicle to travel across time and space to identify landmarks and retell stories of ancient travelers, battles, and wahipana.
Ho‘aha
Braiding the conversation together: a re-convening of participants in the CBHV community meetings
Saturday, June 27
9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. (includes lunch)
Honolulu Airport Best Western on the Plaza
All those who participated in the CBHV community meetings are invited to take part in this gathering. Along with expressing our appreciation to those who gave of their time and mana‘o about the CBHV concept and what it could mean for their own community, this gathering will include a presentation of all that we have heard and how the project team has consolidated and prioritized all that, keeping the process open to continued feedback; a facilitated conversation with the project IT team about how they plan to convert all the community input into a web interface; a discussion of the visitor curriculum and host organization issues and the underlying values of these, and how the proposed model addresses those values; and a detailed conversation about how the CBHV test program, scheduled for November 2009 – June 2010, will be operated. Airfare for those who would like to attend will be covered, along with a small honorarium. For those who would like to attend Ka Huaka‘i Ewa the afternoon before, accommodations will also be provided. For more information, email Ana Currie
